A/C #42-40056 "KATIE'S BOYS"/ "Holy Terror III" MARCH 8, 1944 AIRPLANE CRASHED AT RIESDORF IN THE JÜTERBOG AREA
Ellis still believes today that his parachute jump originated northeast of Berlin. Maybe it is because his plane was last sited 15 miles east of Berlin around the time of the jump. But it is documented that this event took place about 35 miles south of Berlin. Around 5 p.m. that day the salvage team of the second group of the NAG 102 from Jüterbog-Damm, lead by von Ruexleben, reached the crash site and made a complete report of the damage. A comparison of the American missing aircraft report,
This crew lost to Enemy Aircraft about 15 miles East of Berlin after mechanical difficulties made it impossible to maintian formation.
Eyewitness:
"Lt Chapman feathered one engine; then unfeathered it near Dummer Lake about 1240 hours. He continued with the formation, although straggling, to the I.P. where he was attacked by three enemy fighters. Our escort went down and picked him up. His A/C was under control when last seen" -Lt. Shoens
"Saw A/C leave 2nd element, high squadron at 1240 hours near Dummer Lake" Lt. Harper
"Chapman, flying lead, 2nd element, high squadron, lagged at 1357 hours near 5150N and 1054E No#1 engine was feathered and unfeathered." Lt Massol
Lt Rex Ellis: explained, that the engine number 3 was down shortly before crashing.
