A/C # 42-30611 "HORNY" XR-D, 349TH SQUADRON, ASSIGNED TO 100TH LATE JUNE 1943.  Crew also flew 230023 XR-M "Forever Yours".  This plane was named after a famous candy bar during that time and this was painted on the side of the Aircraft in Red lettering in the same fashion as the lettering for the candy bar .  This aircraft, contrary to popular belief was never called Horny.  (info from Henry Henington to mpf 5/2002)

2nd LT HENINGTON RECEIVED THE DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS THREE TIMES DURING HIS TOUR OF DUTY (AUGUST 17, 1943, NOV 13,19, 26 1943 COMBINED  & UPON COMPLETION OF 25 MISSIONS).  TG S/SGT CHARLES A HANTUSCH WOULD ALWAYS SAY "MY GOD, I'M HUNGARY" AFTER BOMBS AWAY.  

**S/SGT WILLIAM  S. BLEVINS (WG) FLEW ON THIS CREW FOR THE FIRST FIVE MISSIONS AND THEN WAS RFS.  ORIGINAL WG (CPL ORTH) TAKEN OFF CREW AT BOVINGDON  (NEW CREWS ORIENTATION CENTER)

(following from Jim Brown)    "THIS CREW JOINED THE 100TH IN EARLY JULY 1943 AND WAS ONE OF THE FIRST FOUR REPLACEMENT CREWS (ROANE, JUSTICE, MORENO AND HENINGTON) TO JOIN THE GROUP.  .Of interest is that Jim Brown never considered Cowboy Roane a replacement since his old friend was in the 100th in the states -( Jim maintained until his death that Roane was not a replacement and never should have been listed as such since his crew was only a couple of weeks late in arriving)..pw  I HAVE FOUND NO RECORD OF THE OTHER MEMBERS OF THIS CREW, BUT DALTON WAS KIA FLYING WITH J.C. GOSSAGE. SEE S.O.C. p. 18/19 and 38. ALSO "BOWMAN'S DIARY (p. 27) NOTES THIS CREW DITCHED ON 3 SEP 1943 (PARIS,BEAUMONT le ROGER, AF (S.T.)) BUT WERE RESCUED AND RETURNED TO THORPE ABBOTTS. TURBO AND ANOTHER PROP RAN AWAY, MADE A DIVING SPIRAL TO FOOL FIGHTERS. iT WORKED, AT CRITIQUE SEVERAL CREWS REPORTED "THEY SPUN DOWN IN FLAMES".  WE WOULD HAVE BAILED OUT, BUT FLAK HIT AND UNPACKED TWO CHUTES.  WE CARRIED A SPARE BUT THAT LEFT US ONE SHORT.  I GAVE THE CREW THE OK TO BAIL OUT AND THAT I WAS GOING TO DITCH IF IT DIDN'T BLOW UP.  STILL ON FIRE, LEVELED AT 4000 FEET, STARTED A SLOW DECENT CROSSING THE COAST NEAR DEPPE AT 500 FEET, AND DITCHED EIGHT MILES OFF SHORE.  NO INJURIES, THE AIRCRAFT FLOATED THREE HOURS.  SIX CREW MEMBERS WERE PICKED UP BY TWO RAF WALRUS SEAPLANES.  THE FOUR REMAINING TO GO IN THE THRID WALRUS, BUT COULD NOT GET AIRBORNE.  THE LEFT PONTOON HAD TAKEN WATER AND WE COULD ONLY CIRCLE.  WE WERE TAKEN ABOARD A ROYAL NAVY PT BOAT THAT TOOK THE WALRUS IN TOW FOR A SLOW CHANNEL CROSSING.  FROM 10 MINUTES AFTER OUR DITCHING TILL THE PT BOAT WAS HALFWAY TO PORT, WE HAD CONSTANT COVER OF 3-5 SPITFIRES.  DUE TO HEAVY MISSION COMMUNICATIONS, WE COULD NOT CONTACT OUR BASE.  NEXT MORNING, THE RAF FLEW US HOME TO LEARN WE WERE MIA (SHOT DOWN OVER FRANCE).

This crew joined the 100th Group in August 1943 a few days after the Regensburg raid of 17/8/43.(17 Aug 43). Flying with the Crew on the Sept 24, 1943 mission was 2nd Lt J.Ward Dalton(Nav from Henington Crew) in place of Lt Nichols and was KIA. 

On 24/9/43 a rather sudden en practice mission was scheduled and it was dis-covered that this crew's regularly assigned A/C was still loaded with bombs from a mission scrubbed earlier that day. Another A/C was assigned the crew and in the rush to take off at the proper time, it was not immediately discovered that the ten machine guns were stored in the nose compartment.

While over the North sea on the practice mission, about 10/15 enemy fighters jumped the formation and left Gossage's ship badly shot up and #3 engine and part of the right wing burning fiercely. Gossage ordered the crew to bail out but he rode the ship to a crash landing in the sea. After about an hour in the water, Gossage, Don, Humphrey, Gillen and Alshouse were picked up by Air-Sea Rescue. Bodies of Schulte & DeCooman were never recovered and their names are inscribed on the Wall Of The Missing at Cambridge, Eng. Bill Grier is buried in the Cambridge Cemetary.

On 3/3/44, Gossage flying with a new crew was shot down on a mission to Berlin and became a POW. Sgt.Humphrey, with the crew of R.D.Vollmer, went down on that same mission and became a POW.

Have not been to 100th. BG Reunion in Palm Springs
since 2007.  During the month of January, the past
two years, I was in Arizonzaon business, instrumenting and
monitoring bridges for the city of Phoenix.  However, this
year I have no conflicts with work and look forward to
seeing you again.
 
Hope your had an enjoyable Christmas and happy New Year.
It has been almost a year now since my mom passed away,
(Glenda Dalton Trombi - sister- J Ward Dalton, navigator with
Henry Hennington), she was 82 years old (4/22/1926 - 2/28/2009).
Going through the Holiday`s without mom for the first time has
not been an enjoyable experience.  But, the memorys of her I
will have forever, as well as my dad.
 
Which brings me to the real reason for this email.  I have just 
started to go through some of my mom`s personal effects.  The
following is a brief listing of documents, letters, and photographs
that I have related to J Ward Dalton and the 100th. BG, most
of which I never knew existed until I found them last weekend.
 
IN A PHOTO ALBUM
31 Newspaper articles related to J Ward Dalton, induction,
training, 100th. BG, medals, death, etc.
20 Assorted photos during training, mostly Navigator School
in Hondo, TX.
6 Photos of J Ward Dalton in uniform and service photos.
3 Photos of medals and awards.
22 War documents from War Department.
4 Telegrams
21 Documents from Hicks Field, Hondo Field, and Randolph Field
related to Flight and Navigation School Training.
 
IN A CEDAR BOX
18 Letters from the War Department which contain another 25-30 documents.
 
IN A CEDAR BOX (OVER 100 LETTERS)
12 Letters when he was in Pilot Replacement Center in San Antonio, TX.
Assigned to SQDRN 8, Flight A, Class 42K.
5 Letters from Hicks Field in Fort Worth, TX.
5 Letters when he was in the Processing Squadron at Ellington Field, TX.
13 Letters when he was assigned to Squadron B, Class 43-L
at Ellington Field, TX.
30 Letters when he was in Navigator School, AAFNS Group 1,
Class 43-3-2 in Hondo, TX.
4 Letters when he went to Blythe, CA and crews were formed. He was
assigned to the 34th. BG, 18th. SQDRN. Hennington, Tripp, Moore etc.
are mentioned in letters as well.
6 Letters from Pyote, TX.  Crew went back to Texas and were
assigned to the 19th. BG, 28th. SQDRN.
3 Letters from Dalhart, TX.  They were now assigned
to the 333 BG, 468th. SQDRN.
1 Letter from Kearny, Nebraska, where they went to get there new
plane and check out all the instrumentation etc.  Short leave home
and then to England.
NOTE : All the above letters are very descriptive since he was
stateside and there were no censorship limitations enforced.
20 Letters from Thorpe in Diss, UK.
2 Letters from Henry Hennington.
7 Letters from his mom that arrived at Thorpe after his death.
3 Letters from Pennock, Sub Depot, a friend of the family who was
in London and went to Brookwood Cemetary in January of 1944.
(There are 4 photos in the envelope of the cemetary and AAF section
with the white cross markers and US flag at half mast). In 1948 Grier
went to Cambridge and Dalton to Arlington.
 
RAMADA INN
I am planning on bringing the above items with me to Palm Springs.
I would like to get together and show you all of this and see if the
100th. BG would be interested in adding this to there collection. The
letters I think would make a nice journal or diary that could be added
to the website, Splasher Six article, etc.  I would like to discuss this with
you and hopefully dedicate to my mom and family on the website.
We can talk about all this when I see you in Palm Springs.  Maybe, we
can all get together at the Ramada Inn, with Ron and Carol, as well as
any individuals that work on the website. Think about this and let me know.
