MEMO 2:
Charles C. Anthony was born in Michigan on January 22, 1918. His parents were Charles and Ida M. Klein Anthony. All US Censuses from 1920 through 1940 lists the family as residing in Grayling, Michigan. The 1940 Census has Anthony listed as an employee (clerk), living in the household of Isabel Cassidy. Anthony enlisted in Michigan in 1943. He was selected for flight duty, and trained as an aerial gunner. Upon completing this course of instruction, he was promoted to Sergeant, and assigned to a crew headed by Lt. Terry for crew training. This crew was sent to England, and arrived there on December 31, 1943. They flew 4 missions.
On March 6, 1944, the crew was dispatched to bomb areas in and around Berlin, Germany. Over the target, enemy aircraft attacked and damaged this B-17. Three men bailed out, and made safe landings, but were captured. Seven bodies were recovered from the crash scene, and buried locally. After the war ended, these remains were retrieved and moved to a temporary military cemetery. Later, most of them were released and sent to families for private burial. At present, Sgt Anthony lies in the Elmwood Cemetery in Grayling, Michigan. SSgt Charles C. Anthony was acting as the left waist gunner on B-17G # 42-97482, named "Terry and the Pirates," assigned to the 418th Bomb Squadron.
Missing Air Crew Report 3033 was issued to account for this loss. Combat crew rosters state the crew to have been:
