Database Search

You are in the database section of the website.

Select a record category from RECORDS above. When you have selected a category, you will see search options for that category above the record list.

Most fields require at least three characters. When you submit your query, the search engine will return all records that contain your search term.

Note that when searching for an aircraft serial number, you must enter the full serial number without the leading "4" and without a dash in the Aircraft SN search field. For example, you would enter 42-37772 as 237772.

The Personnel name field searches both last and first names, so if you enter the search term, "Russ", the search engine will return both Russell Abel and James Russell.

You narrow the search by entering more characters into the search field. For example, "Russ" returns many hits. "Russell" returns fewer hits. The same principle applies to all queries.

The POW and KIA categories are list only and are not searchable.

SUBJECT: Commendation.

TO: 2nd Lt. Celesta B. Harper, 350th Bomb. Sqdn. (H)

1. Special recognition is hereby tendered you and your entire
crew for your fine conduct during a most dangerous and strenuous initiation
into combat flying.

2. Your first four operational missions have been flown in the
brief period of nine days, and all have been deep penetrations of Germany
proper. After your inaugural trip, to Brunswick on 29 February 1944, you went
on the tentative mission to Berlin on 3 March, and the great attacks on the
German capital on 6 and 8 March.

3. Probably few bomber pilots and crews have had such an epic
introduction to battle, and your courage, resolution and effectiveness in the
circumstances certainly merit the highest praise.

4. Please accept, and convey to all members of your crew,
my sincere thanks and congratulations
.

Mike: Good to hear from you again. Sorry the Bloody Hundredth didn't get an earlier start on Rosie's death.
I E-mailed Jan 45 min after he died but she didn't get message for a couple or so days.
Frank Murphy & Dr. Brown (Museum CEO & editor of 8th AFHS magazine) were keeping me posted & I received
message a few minutes after Rosie passed on. I had a message that Dr. Brown & Buck Shuler were in touch with
Don Miller (Masters of the Air) and he volunteered to do the obit. You did a review of Don's book in Splasher 6 that included about
everyone in the 100th that was mentioned but me. I didn't know anything about the book until one day I received one in the mail.
Cong. Medal of Honor Recipient Bill Lawley's (desc.) wife had same experience. Guess that was remuneration to us for the communication we knew nothing about - but neither of us had any problem with it. Really honored I guess.
I knew Rosie before we arrived in England. We were in the same stateside Phase Training class before shipping us to England &
being assigned to 8th AF & 100th BG.
I'm sending you copy of last message I received from Dr. Brown.
Thanks for your E-mail. My health won't allow me to make the meeting in September.
I'm on crutches with a balance problem from a TIA and my wife is legally blind.
           Vaya con Dios

Mike: I'm sorry to be so late in answering your request. I have had some health problems that slowed me down to a crawl..
I hunted for the communication you referred to that I sent to Luc Dewez & finally found it dated May 17, 1996. I couldn't
remember what I'd said. I have nothing to add other than I was flying 009 on that mission which wasn't my regular plane & I didn't know it was BLACK CAT. Also I recently found out that the clouds I flew back in after being shot up that day pretty well also contained Mark Cope's plane and we must have been pretty close together and didn't know it.

There is a photo in the 100th BG web site of a formation being issued medals. There is a guy at the front row right end
with a caption stating that every one is at attention except him - he is at parade rest and says that is me..
I find that derogatory and it isn't me anyway.

Oh well..I sent an E-mail to Jan that the Chaplain of 100th Air Refuelling Wing in the UK,
Lt. Col. Mike Moore would be in charge of the Memorial Day Affair at Maddingly Cemetery, UK had a Square "D" pin inside his formal blouse during the ceremonies but she didn't reply. Guess nobody cares. Also I'm writing an article about a 100th BG copilot that was shot down & Stalag II guest for a year and half then after the war started flying F4s & F104s. Was shot down over Vietnam and guest of Hanoi Hilton for couple years. Probably no other pilot ever spent that much PW time also in 2 wars. She didn't reply so I guess no one cares about old ex 100th BG guys and
that kind of trivia. He was flying a borrowed plane when shot down in Veitnam. About a month ago his F4 was unvailed at 8th AF
HQ in Shreveport, LA with his name on the side and a big noise about it in the Shreveport Times. The guy died a couple years
ago. Also just received word that my left waist gunner, Wiley Dobbs, died last Friday from massive heart attack. He was to be
cremated & requested no services of any kind be conducted and his remains to go to someplace in Illinois. I'm having a hard time
getting information. He had turned everything over to his daughter-in-law - she was his business agent - house - finances -
everything. She and Wileys son are divorced & Wiley didn't have anything to do with his son. The woman lives in Arizona
and was told about Wiley's death while she was en route to N.Y. to see about him. She said she would be at his house
for at least a month - I will keep trying to find out what they intend to do with his remains. I suppose this is of no interest
to anyone else but damn sure is to me.
                       Regards
                           RED

 From Red Harper:

Dear Jan: Just received word that Wiley Dobbs my left waist gunner made his last flight Friday June 3, 2007.
Wiley had turned everything over to his daughter-in-law a few years back - his bank account, home & everything.
She was his business agent more or less. Wiley had a problem of some kind with his son who was divorced
from Michelle (recently married to a Harris) and didn't want to have anything to do with his son.
Michelle lives in Arizona and phoned me that Wiley had passed away in the hospital with a massive
heart attack and she was notified about it while on her way to New York to check on him.
I was stunned and asked as many questions as I could think of. She said he did not want a funeral service - that
he wanted to be cremated and I think his remains were to be sent to a place in Illinois.
I explained to her that I had been responsible to send a wreath to all the Buffalo Gal crew members that had
passed away but in his case I didn't know how that could be accomplished and asked for her advice.
She seems to think it will be about a month before she will know the whole story. I'm confused too.
In cremation cases that I've known of, people usually have a memorial service and the remains are put in a
vase or jar or either taken home & put on the shelf or they go into a Columbarium at a cemetery that is provided for that purpose. Maybe I will learn more later.
His Daughter-in-Law goes by the name of Shelley and she & her husband are to be at Wiley's house for at least a month.
Regards to you and the rest of the Bloody Hundredth Foundation Family

Good Afternoon Mike,

I am forwarding you information regarding the descendent of 100th BG / 350th BS Bombardier, Arthur Cox. His nephew, Samuel Shutt, was in the 390th Memorial Museum today and asked us about his uncle, Arthur “Buddy” Cox. (See links below). We found out he was with the 100th BG and that he was KIS while flying with the 15th Air Force. I told Mr. Shutt that I would put him contact with you, as you are the 100BG Historian and an all around wonderful guy! The Shutts also have memorabilia/artifacts from their Uncle’s time in the 100th. I let them know that the 100th BG has a beautiful exhibit at Palm Springs Air Museum as well as other museums around the U.S. (Yankee Air Museum / Mighty 8th in Savannah, GA ext) and of course, Thorpe Abbotts.
