Note that when searching for an aircraft serial number, you must enter the full serial number without the leading "4" and without a dash in the Aircraft SN search field. For example, you would enter 42-37772 as 237772.

The Personnel name field searches both last and first names, so if you enter the search term, "Russ", the search engine will return both Russell Abel and James Russell.

You narrow the search by entering more characters into the search field. For example, "Russ" returns many hits. "Russell" returns fewer hits. The same principle applies to all queries.

The POW and KIA categories are list only and are not searchable.

Pvt. Dudley C. Runnels, Class 44-13, Flexible Gunner School, Kingman Army Air Field, Ariz. (1944 yearbook, pg 88) - later Top-Turret Gunner/Engineer with the Vermont Anderson Crew, 349th BS, 100th BG (H) - POW 30 November 1944 - Merseburg - six of his crew mates were killed, only he and two others survived and became prisoners.

349th Sqdn. Crew,as above, joined 100th Group on 20 Oct 1944 and was on it's fourth mission.

 'MACR #10831 (micro fiche # 3984 ). Flying A/C #43 38211. 

 EYEWITNESS:  "A/C #43-38211 was hit just after bombs away.  The right wing burst into flames and the aircraft fell off on it's right side, spinning down into the ground.  This aircraft was almost competely in flames when it fell from the formation.  Two (2) chutes were observered."  The aircraft received a direct flak burst and went down in a tight spin at 1320 hours, 26,625 ft in the Merseburg area. It was seen to crash and explode among a group of large smoke stacks.

Dudley C. Runnels Jr.

1922 - 2011

Born to Dudley and Martha Runnels in Los Angeles on July 30, 1922. 
Went to be with the Lord July 20, 2011 at the age of 88.

Dudley is survived by Margaret Elaine the love of his life for 68 years and three sons, Dudley III, Steve and Tim, 8 Grandchildren and 10 Great Grandchildren.

He followed his fathers footsteps and became a meat cutter retiring after 32 years. He continued his career for 7 more years as a computer analyst for Boeing Aircraft retiring again and moving to Redding in 1988.

He served his country in World War II as a member of the 100th Bomb Group better known as the Bloody 100th flying missions over Germany as the engineer in B-17 eventually being shot down, captured and enduring four months of the Black March before being liberated in 1945.

His devout faith in the Lord made him a pillar among his peers and was very supportive of his church and many outreach programs.
During his retirement he was very involved with the local POW chapter and had a passion for the horse races and square dancing.
