Database Search

You are in the database section of the website.

Select a record category from RECORDS above. When you have selected a category, you will see search options for that category above the record list.

Most fields require at least three characters. When you submit your query, the search engine will return all records that contain your search term.

Note that when searching for an aircraft serial number, you must enter the full serial number without the leading "4" and without a dash in the Aircraft SN search field. For example, you would enter 42-37772 as 237772.

The Personnel name field searches both last and first names, so if you enter the search term, "Russ", the search engine will return both Russell Abel and James Russell.

You narrow the search by entering more characters into the search field. For example, "Russ" returns many hits. "Russell" returns fewer hits. The same principle applies to all queries.

The POW and KIA categories are list only and are not searchable.

FROM LES POITRAS
RE: S/SGT LESLIE MOORE

I was wrong, this photo wasn’t taken stateside. He references this photo in is mission diary: “This photo was taken shortly after I received my air medal”. He received the air medal on July 20th, so it must have been taken in England. I say this because he flew 5 missions after the 20th, at the end of July and his last mission was Nov. 2nd. I love this photo. It captures a look of courage at a time when he’s not even half way through his missions. Also, my grandfather was a handsome guy and this is a great photo of him. My mother used to tell me that in her teenage years many of her girlfriends had crushes on him!

Article: “Danger Unknown By Crew of Flying Fort Over Leipzig”:

“Staff Sgt. Leslie B. Moore of Tyndall Field, Fla., veteran gunner who recently returned from the 8th Air Force, is a firm believer in the old saying, “What you don’t know won’t hurt you,” especially when you’re flying over Germany thru heavy flak and fighter opposition.

Sgt. Moore back(ed) up this belief with the following story. “We were on a mission over Leipzig when our Flying Fort was hit by heavy flak, shooting up our tail and knocking off our reserve gas tank. The flak also cut our main wing spar, but we didn’t discover that damage until we got back to our base. None of us knew about the weakened spar, and I’m glad we didn’t. It saved us all a lot of sweating on the return trip.

Moore, who hails from Jackman (ME), flew 33 missions in all, including one of the first shuttle-raids over the continent. “We started from England, bombing enemy occupied territory on the way to Russia and then gave it to them again on the next leg of our trip to Italy. From Italy, we returned to England.”

He also has two tactical bombing missions over St. Lo to is credit, flying in at the low altitude of 1,000 feet, which was well within the range of the enemy’s anti-aircraft guns. “The Nazis threw up everything that would reach us,” Moore said, “but we managed to drop our bombs on the target and get out.”

Moore holds the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and the group was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for its bombing of the oil refineries at Regensburg. The father of two baby girls, Moore is living at Tyndall Field, Florida with his wife and family, His parents reside in Skowhegan (ME).”

One more thing I found, a paper French Franc signed by his crew members and some Italian Lyre, also signed. This stuff is priceless.
I can’t wait to show Bill Bates the Franc. He wrote “Hi-ya lower ball – Lt. Bill Bates”
*************************************************************************************************************

Hello again Michael,

I have my grandfather's mission diary in front of me right now. On the cover, it has the insignia for the 100th bomb group, says "100th Bomb Group" under the insignia and coincidentally has "G. Winkler" printed in the bottom right hand corner. Also, on the back it has "G. Winkler" at the top and underneath that, the number 12139360. So, it looks like this diary was issued to George W. Winkler, but used by my grandfather Leslie B. Moore.

On the inside cover it has the same print as the back cover: "G. Winkler" and 12139360 underneath that, but that is crossed out. In my grandfather's writing it says "property of ball turret gunner" L. B. Moore S/Sgt. It then says: "100th Bomb Group" "Century Bombers" "crew 68". After that, many pages are torn out, I am assuming the pages torn out had belonged to "George Winkler"? I have no idea.

On the following page it says: "The Crew" and the crew list is as follows:

Pilot: Dale L. Darby 1st Lt.
Co-Pilot: Frank B. Musser 1st Lt.
Navigator: Roland E. Tornquist 1st Lt.
Bombadier: William S. Bates 1st Lt. (under this name it has a street address in Murrysville PA, 15668)
Engineer: Albert J. Singleton T/Sgt.
Radio Operator: Charles E. Lowe: T/Sgt.
Waist Gunner: George Winkler S/Sgt.
Tail Gunner: Stanley H. Singpiel S/Sgt.

It doesn't list Roy W. Giacomelli.

On the next page it says "Flying time":

on the next page, he attached an article written by Ernie Pyle entitled "Straight from the Front" and wrote "Mission IX" next to the title of the article. The article doesn't have a date but it starts with "Normandy - our front lines were marked with long stripes of colored cloth". It is a powerful and emotional article. The most devastating part of the article, I'll quote here:

"Chutes came out of some of the planes, out of some came no chutes at all. One, of white silk, caught on the tale of a plane. The men with binoculars could see him fighting to get loose until flames swept over him and then a tiny black dot fell through space all alone."

now I'll wipe my eyes and proceed with typing his journal.

Cpl. Leslie Moore, husband of Margaret E. Moore of 6 Worcester Square, Boston is now overseas and has participated in a course designed to bridge the gap between training in the states and soldiering in an active theatre of war. At one of the Air Service Command stations known as Control Depots Cpl. Moore was carefully processed by classification experts who make certain that he was well fitted for the job assigned to him. Security training, personal hygience, a talk by a Special Service Officer informing him of facilities for healthful recreation and a lecture by the Chaplain are all in turn a part of the soldier's preparation for duties overseas. His next station will be one from which America's fighting planes will take off to smash the Nazi war machine. Before entering the Army he was employed as a ship fitter by the New England Ship Building corp.

"Was on this mission - Oct. 15, 1944 - a newspaper clipping" entitled "Nose Torn Off by Flak, but B-17 Returns from Raid" It doesn't say the name of the B-17, but the pilot was 1/Lt. Lawrence M. Delaney.

(last two pages):

"The picture on the opposite page was taken on our last mission. The plane going down was in the group ahead of us. They were going over the target at the time. I did not see the plane going down, thank God, as I had seen so many of them go down the same way. Some of the boys in the crew saw it"

The last page contains a picture of a B-17 plummeting to the earth. It was brought down as the 8th Air Force raided a synthetic oil plant at Merseburg Germany, on Nov. 2.

So there are the contents of my grandfather's mission diary. I'm certainly not expecting you to put up everything on the site, but please, by all means, use whatever you wish.

Thanks,
Les Poitras (grandson of Sgt Leslie Moore
