Really had a funny thing happen today. Gentle was riding his bicycle near the QM Warehouse, all the time trying to run me off the road. It so happened that "Fat Boy" Marshall was riding along behind when Gentle stopped sideways in the road with his bicycle leaning half over. Marshall couldn't stop, so ran right over his back wheel bending it in half. Gentle was so dumbfounded he couldn't say a word. 10 March 1944, 2nd Lt. Sine received orders again to proceed to Hqs. CBS, London for his transportation. No one thought a thing of him leaving cause has been returning each time after leaving to get his transportation. This morning the Company area was in an uproar with everyone up early. The reason for everyone up so early was of the rumor spread around last night by the Commissary boys that we would have two fresh eggs per man for breakfast. That is enough to drive anyone from his warm sack. 13 March 1944 Sgt. Henes from duty to Detached Service, Isleworth PP #5 Special Order #68, #68 Hqs. Station 139 APO 634 dated 11 March 1944. 2nd Lt. Thorpe from Absent Sick, 231st Station Hospital to Absent Sick, 7th General Hospital, APO 514 (LD) per Letter, 7th General Hospital dated 2 March 1944. 14 March 1944 Tec 5 Crooks returned from 7 day furlough to duty. Cpl. Glorius, Tec 5 Weiford and Pfc. Constant from duty to furlough, 7 days. Sgt. Henes from Detached Service, Isleworth to duty. 15 March 1944 S/Sgt Bob Myers dropped in the office today after returning from his 17th mission, which was Brunswick. He seemed in pretty good spirits, but mentioned that it wouldn't be so bad to be back in the 1141st again. 17 March 1944, S/Sgt McCurry was in to say good-bye to all the fellows before leaving for the States. He finished on the 2nd of March He couldn't even sit down and talk to us ho was so excited about getting home to see his wife and two boys. 18 March 1944, 2nd Lt. Sine has been gone 8 days 80 he must have gotten the necessary for his Secret Orders. There still is a chance that he could return again. We hope some one has picked him up on their morning report cause he was here on this Post from 23 January 1944 and just considered a visitor. 19 March 1944, S/Sgt. Pasma returned from a 48 hour pass with a friend of his from his home town, Sgt. Lee Stad. Pirtle was talking to him and found out that he is stationed the same Camp as a friend of his from Bloomfield, Iowa. Sgt. Stadt is in the Mechanized Calvary and said we really had it nice here compared to what they have. They had it worse in the States while training than we have here now so guess we can't kick too much. 20 March 1944, 1st Lt. Krinke from duty to Detached Service, London PP #12 Special Order #75 Hqs. Station 139 APO 634 dated 18 March 1944. Sgt. Henes from duty to Detached Service, Isleworth PP #3 Special Order #76 Hqs. Station 139 APO 634 dated 19 March 1944. 21 March 1944 Cpl. Glorius, Tec 5 Weiford and Pfc. Constant returned from 7 day furlough to duty. Tec 5 Siss from duty to furlough, 7 days. Sgt. Henes from Detached Services Isleworth to duty. 22 March l944, our APO Number was changed from 634 to 559 per USSTAF Regulation No. 80-2 dated 7 March 1944. 1st Lt. Krinke from Detached Service London to duty. Pvt. Douglas from duty to Sick Quarters (LD Undetermined). 23 March 1944, Sgt. Henes from duty to furlough, 7 days. 2nd Lt. Thorpe, Absent Sick, 7th General Hospital, APO 138 transferred to Det. of Patients, 7th General Hospital PP #2 Special Order #79 Hqs. Station 139 APO 559 dated 22 March 1944. 25 March 1944 another day gone by and no mail. The morale has hit an all time low; the only mail coming in is a few V-Mail. Pirtle has been catching the devil from all the fellows when returning from the Post Office empty handed. It does seem funny the way mail has been lately. We go for quite sometime without any and then all of a sudden it comes through in a bunch. 27 March 1944, Tec 5 Weiford from duty to Detached Service, Is1eworth PP #5, Special Order #82 Hqs. Station 139 APO 559 dated 25 March 1944. Henes being on furlough, Hatfield had to take the run this week, but didn't mind too much. Capt. Scharding received a letter of Commendation, for the entire Company, from Colonel HARDING dated 26 March 1944. Following is letter and 1st Ind. from Capt. Scharding to the men. HEADQUARTERS AAF STATION # 139 APO #559 26 March l944 SUBJECT: Commendation. TO : Captain E. G. Scharding, Quartermaster, AAF Station 139. "1. It has been brought to my attention, through recent inspections and by members of my staff, that the Quartermaster Section is functioning in a superior manner. 2. This is not only gratifying to me personally, but indicates excellent leadership and understanding on your part, and hard work and complete cooperation on the part of the other officers and of the enlisted men of your section. 3. I wish to commend you and the officers and enlisted personnel of the Quartermaster Sections and to express the hope that the standard which you have set will be maintained. 4. A copy of this letter has been placed in you 201 File. NEIL B. HARDING, Colonels Air Corps, Commanding. 1st Ind. 28 March 1944 TO: Enlisted Men of 1141st QM Co. Serv Gp. Avn(RS). "1. Though the above is addressed to me, it is really intended for you men. My part is small in comparison to the fine showing you have made in doing an outstanding service. I add my appreciation to the Colonel's Commendation to you. E. G. SCHARDING Capt. QMC Commanding 28 March Tec 5 Tec 5 Sims returned from 7 day furlough to duty. Sgt. Gels, Tec 4 Wood and Pfc. Uhlman from duty to furlough, 7 days. Tec 5 Weiford from Detached Service, Isleworth to duty. 30 March 1944, Sgt. Douglas from Sick Quarters to Absent Sick, 65th General Hospital, APO 551 (LD Undetermined). Plenty of excitement on the Base this morning around 0430 hours when a German JU88 (they think anyway) followed the Pathfinder in and dropped two 500 pounders on the runway. The first bomb woke most everyone up but the second one brought everyone out of their sacks in a hurry. The whole Base was ups so it caused a long chow line, also had "hot cakes too, to make matters worse. It sure didn't take Crooks and Burke long to head for shelter cause Griffin was knocked over when they went through the door. "The Prisoner of War Fund Smoker" was held in Hangar No. 1 tonight. Had boxing matches wrestling girl singer from Scotland and Century Bombers for entertainment. The four Bomb Sqds. had stands raffling things off such as silk stockings, lipsticks etc. Also sold beer and sandwiches for everyone, if you could get near to buy them. They raffled the silk stockings and lipsticks off and some guys paid as high as 10 lbs. for a pair of stockings and 5 lbs.. for a lipstick. Mighty expensive to make the girl feel good isn't it? From all reports the Base made their quota that was set-up by 3rd Bomb Division. Most all of our boys went cause we had two boys that went down after going into Gunnery. APRIL 1944 1 April 1944, the following named Enlisted Man assigned this organization, PP #10 Special Order #90 Hqs. 3rd Bomb Divisions APO 559 dated 30 March 1944. Pvt. Karl W. Diss was taken from the "Off-Limits" list for personnel of this Station even though the Negroes were still there. Of course the white boys had trouble the first night there. When any of the fellows go down to Diss, the boys usually call them "Negro Lovers cause all the girls in Diss have been going out with the Negroes. 6 April 1944, the following named Enlisted Men assigned this organization PP #30 Special Order #95 Hqs. 3rd Bomb Division, APO 559 dated 4 April 1944. Hodor heard from his sister, whoa said that she had heard from Allen Loomis (former member of 188th QM) and he is "Somewhere in China." From the sound of his letter the conditions in China are not too good. Give us the ETO anytime. 6 April 1944, we had some visitors to see us, former members this organization Conway, Davis and Harrison, now of the 1238th QM Co. Serv Gp, Avn (RS). Could see parachutes flying all over the sky. 22 April 1944, Station Headquarters announced that 18 hour passes were in effect this date, which brought a cheer from all the boys. 24 April 1944, Sgt. That made his 8th mission. Barney makes the third one down from out outfit that went over to Gunnery. 24 hour passes were authorized, effective today by the Station Commander. 29 April 1944, Tec 5 Dillon and Pfc. This day will usually find most all the fellows in good spirits. 1 May 1944, Sgt. Henes from duty to Detached Service, Isleworth PP #6, Special Order #115, Hqs. Krinke had a bad fall from Mike's horse in the pasture next to the QM warehouse. Seems he wanted to take a ride, so jumped on, but landed too far back and next thing he landed on is face on the ground. Few scratches and bruises, but no broken bones. Then our Jockey-boy Griffin made a bridle from some rope in the Warehouse and rode the horse around the pasture, much to Lt. Krinke's discomfort.. 13 May 1944, the following named Enlisted Men assigned this organization from the 1239th QM Co. Serv Gp, Avn (RS), Station 174, APO 559 PP #28, Special Order #127. Hqs. 3rd Bomb Division, APO 559 dated 6 May 1944 Tec 5 Lonnie A. Terry, 15057684 Pvt. Ernest F. Bahr. 32995811 T/Sgt Sheedy from Sick Quarters to Absent Sick, 213st Station Hospital, APD 598 (LD). Our Softball team played Horham in a game in Diss and were beaten by a score of 6 to 5. It was played for an attraction to "Salute the Soldier" week in Diss. 15 May 1944, Sgt. Everyone from M/Sgt. on down would pull it. 19 May 1944, Pvt. Thompson from Absent Sick, 65th General Hospital, APO 551 to duty (LD). A Company Party was held in the Old Officer's Club with the 456th Sub-Depot. As usual we had plenty of the "mild and bitters", eats, coca cola, and girls for dancing. The Century Bombers furnished the music for dancing and were better than ever. This was the first party in about three months for out Company, so the boys let themselves go for a good time, which they most always do. 20 May 1944, Pfc. Jarrell and Pvt. Bahr from duty with organization to Special Duty with 1285th M.P. Co. PP #1, Special Order #136, Hqs. Station 139, APO 559 dated 20 May 1944. 21 May 1944, the 1141st softball team played with the 350th Bomb Squadron, but got beat by a score of 5 to 4 in a very close game. 22 May 1944, Sgt. Station Headquarters issued orders for everyone on the Base to carry their guns during working hours, with one clip full of ammunition. 23 May 1944, makes one year on Foreign soil for this Company and it does seem like a long time ago. None of the boys shall forget the day we walked on the S.S. Mariposa. 29 May 1944, Gentle and Marshall spent a 23 hour pass with Conway and the boys at Station 137, Lavenham. 30 May 1944, 1st Lt. Krinke from duty to Detached Service, Stone PP #5, Special Order #145, Hqs. Station 139, APO 559 dated 28 May 1944. Sgt. Hanes from duty to Detached Service, Isleworth PP #4, Special Order #144, Hqs Station 139, APO 559 dated 28 May 1944. 31 May 1944, Sgt. Hanes from Detached Service, Isleworth to duty. Another payday has rolled around. Doesn't seem possible the month of May had gone already. 1 June 1944, makes on year in the ETO for this Company. Most everyone is wondering where we will be a year from this date. Lt. Krinke from Detached Service to duty. 2 June 1944, Tec 5 Hodor from duty to Sick Quarters (LD). 4 June 1944, Great news came today over BBC telling about the fall of Rome by the 5th Army. Sure does make a fellow feel good to read and hear about these victories. 5 June 1944, Sgt. Hanes from duty to Detached Service, Isleworth PP #12, Special Order #150, Hqs Station 139, APO 559 dated 4 June 1944. Pvt. Rohrer transferred to 350th Bomb Squadron, 100th Bomb Group PP #8, Special Order #151, Hqs. Station 139, APO 559 dated 4 June 1944. Station Headquarters issued orders this morning authorizing 24 hour passes within a 23 mile limit. At 1700 hours the whole Base was restricted. 6 June 1944, D-DAY has finally arrived after hearing about it so long. All the fellows were sure happy to know that the invasion Day had arrived. Lots of arguing and bets were made concerning it. Now the bets are to see how long it will take the Allies to whip Germany. Sgt. Hanes from Detached Service to duty. 6 June 1944 Cont'd, S/Sgt. Bob Myers finished his 30 missions today. That finishes all of our six boys that went into Gunnery September 1943. Sgt. Hoffman is a prisoner of war of the Germans, S/Sgt. Barnhart hasn't been heard from since going down with Colonel Kelly's ship, S/Sgt. Sowl has been grounded for an indefinite period and also reduced to Private, for what reason no one seems to know, but he was and that is the Army for you. S/Sgt. McCurry has written to us from the U.S. stating he was on a three week furlough with his wife in Miami Beach, Fla., and on the government too. The first sentence in his letter was, quote, "You would never know this is the Army," and also said give him any part of the U.S. instead of the ETO. 7 June 1944, Tec 5 Hodor from Sick Quarters to duty (LD). Marshall, Salvo and Meyers had quite the experience while on guard duty early this morning. A German plane made a couple of passes at the field, pouring some lead around. Between the gunfire from the plane, from the AA Gunners and ground personnel with their carbines, tracers and bullets were flying everywhere. Guess you would call it a 4th of July fireworks, Marshall, Salvo and Meyers had to hit the runway and mighty quick too. 8 June 1944, Station Headquarters issued orders that the restriction was lifted for 6 hour passes. The boys went "Pubbing" tonight and had Marshall so loaded he couldn't cycle home. That is something very unusual too, because he is always able to come in on his own power. Always a first time for everything, eh Gus. 9 June 1944, Sheedy from Absent Sick, 231st Station Hospital, APO 598 to duty. 10 June 1944, there was a voluntary contribution taken up from the boys during the past week to by a barrel of "Mild and Bitter". The beer was for a party to celebrate being in England one year and had it in the day room. Also had chicken, sandwiches, cookies, cake and coca cola. Clark, Andreatta, O'Keefe, Cudd and Salve sort of kept things in an uproar with Marshall, Philbin, Crooks, Dillon, Harnden (bartender), Wuoti and Burke helping out. All the boys had a good time watching, if not in on it. O'Keefe had a couple of speeches during the evening, but had a hard time getting the floor. 12 June 1977, Sgt. Henes, M/Sgt. Fulton and T/Sgt. Sheedy f from duty to Detached Service, Isleworth PP #8, Special Order #157m Hqs. Station 139, APO 559 dated 10 June 1944. The following named Enlisted Man of this organization transferred to the 350th Bomb Sqd, 100th Bomb Group PP #6, Special Order #158, Hqs. Station 139, APO 559 dated 11 June 1944. Pfc. William G. Jarrell, 14049842 13 June 1944, Sgt. Henes, M/Sgt. Fulton, T/Sgt. Sheedy from Detached Service, Isleworth to duty. 15 June 1944, Conway and Tschappat were up today for a visit on their 24 hour pass. 16 June 1944, the Sergeant's Club had its informal opening tonight. A meeting was held about two months ago with Major Utley to form the club. It was decided to charge a fee of three pounds to join now and everyone coming into the Club later would pay four pounds. A fairly good crowd turned out for the affair. The Club is really something with it's "Western Style" bar. The logs around the bar make it look good. The lounge really does look good with half bombs, made by the 1776th Ord. boys, hanging from the ceiling to make indirect lighting. Also have lamps made out of bombs, by the writing tables. Real nice over stuffed chairs for comfortable resting in the evening, should say half overstuffed. 17 June 1944, the Restriction was lifted at 1900 hours by Station Headquarters allowing six hour passes. 18 June 1944, another order from Station Headquarters issued stating 24 hour passes would be authorized. The 1141st softball team played a practice game with Hqs. Det. 100th and the final score was 18 to 7 in our favor. Gentle was the hero of the game with 2 home runs and all the fellows played a good game. 19 June 1944, 1st Lt. Joyce from duty to Detached Service, Isleworth PP #3, Special Order #165, Hqs Station 139 APO 559 dated 18 June 1944. Sgt. Henes, S/Sgt. Salvo and Cpl. Andreatta from duty to Detached Service, Isleworth PP #3. Special Order #165, Station 139, APO 559 dated 18 June 1944. 20 June 1944, Sgt. Henes, S/Sgt. Salve and Cpl. Andreatta from Detached Service, Isleworth to duty. This made Henes 18th trip to Isleworth and he says he could make the trip by truck with his eyes closed. Station Headquarters issued orders at 1830 hours today that the Base was Restricted. 21 June 1944, 1st Lt. Joyce from Detached Service, Isleworth to duty. Station Headquarters issued orders that Restriction was lifted at 1200 hours. Both 6 and 24 hour passes are authorized. 22 June 1944, Tec 5 Alexander and Tec 5 Hodor awarded the Driver's Badge PP #7, Special Order #168, Hqs Station 139, APO 559 dated 21 June 1944. 22 June l944 Cont'd, Fulton, Salvo, Hodor and Sheedy paid a visit to Dephan Green at the Air Base to see Jess Blaine, Albert Kolb and Caldwell. It was first time we have seen those three fellows in over two years. Really was something to get to talk with them for awhile. All three of them are getting along fine, but would like to get back to the U.S. 23 June l944, the Sergeants Club had its formal opening with a dance, plenty of eats, scotch and beer. The Century Bombers furnished the music and were sure good. We had 25 WAC's from 3rd Bomb and civilian girls, so a good time was had by all. 48 hour passes were authorized today per 8th Air Force TWX D-652-53 dated 22 June 1944, so 12 of the fellows were allowed to go to London or thereabouts. Gentle had his hair clipped down to about a quarter of an inch, so the fellows now call him "The Monk" or "Boogie" for sure. One year ago today we moved from Station 167, Ridgewell to Station 139, Thorpe Abbotts. Doesn't seem possible that a year has gone by in such a hurry. We have been living in the same huts at Site #6 all this time too. 24 June l944 we had word today, through the "Grapevine", that 1st Lt. Banks was promoted to Captain effective 15 June 1944. 25 June 1944 Pfc. Stapleton from duty to Absent Sick, 231st Station Hospital APO 872, U. S. Army (LD). Stapleton had some tough luck when he fell off his bicycle near Watton, Norfolk with Gies. When he fell his sun glasses gave him a severe cut on the side of the right eye, so that is how he happens to be Absent Sick. The boys all accused him of everything, but he says no soap. Sims can tell you quite a story about the Air Raid Shelters in London. From his say so it is a very nice place to sleep when the "Flying Bombs" are coming over. Guess he spent most of his 48 hour pass in an Air Raid Shelter, so could be called Lloyd "Air Raid Shelter" Sims. 12 more of the fellows left on a 48 hour pass to London today. 26 June 1944 Sgt. Henes from duty to Detached Service, Isleworth PP #10 Special Order #171, Hqs. Station 139, APO 559 dated 24 June 1944. 27 June 1944 48 hour passes ceased to be today by order of Station Headquarters. Sgt. Henes from Detached Service, Isleworth to duty. 27 June 1944 Cont'd, the Base Adjutant's Office issued the Unit Citation Ribbons to each outfit. S/Sgt. Salvo, our very able Supply Sergeant, issued them to us today. The ribbon is issued to all units of the 100th Bomb Group in accordance with Section XII.- 2., General Order #36, War Department dated 1 May 1944, as Stated below: (G. O. 36) WAR DEPARTMENT Washington 25 D. C., 1 May 1944 General Orders)
No. 36 ) XII BATTLE HONORS. - 2. As authorized by Executive Order No. 9396 (sec. Is Bull. 22 WD, 1943) superseding Executive Order No. 9075 (sec. III, Bull. II, WD, 1942), the following unit is cited by the War Department under the provisions of section IV, Circular No. 333, War Department, 1943, in the name of the President of the United States as public evidence of deserved honor and distinction: The 3d Bombardment Division (H) (then the 4th Bombardment Wing (H) )is cited for outstanding performance of duty in action against the enemy on 17 August 1943. This unprecedented attack against one of Germany's most important aircraft factories was the first shuttle mission performed in this theater of operations and entailed the longest flight over strongly defended enemy territory yet accomplished at that date. For 4 hours the formation was subjected to persistent savage assaults by large forces of enemy fighters. During this bitterly contested aerial battle 140 German fighter aircraft were definitely destroyed and many more damaged. Despite desperate attempts by the enemy to scatter the bombers the groups of the 3d Bombardment Division (H) maintained a tight, defensive formation and, coordinating as a perfectly balanced team, fought their way to the assigned target at Regensburg. Though weary after hours of grueling combat the bombardiers released their bombs accurately on the target and wrought vast destruction on an aircraft factory of vital importance to the enemy's war effort. The high degree of success achieved is directly attributable to the extraordinary heroism, skill, and devotion to duty displayed by members of this unit. Their actions on this occasion uphold the highest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States. By order of the Secretary of War: OFFICIAL: ROBERT H. DUNLOP, Brigadier General, Acting The Adjutant General. G. C. MARSHALL, Chief of Staff. 28 June l944, there has been quite a few "latrinegram" rumors going around about where and when we might move. One rumor had it the 100th would go to Nebraska because someone said they had a sign back at Carnie, Nebraska which read, Welcome back 100th Bomb Group. Those kind of rumors bring up the morale, but one like China or India take it a way down. June 1944, Lt. "Rosie" Rosenthal brought the 1211th QM Co. softball team over to play a game against our team tonight. They beat us in 8 innings by a score of 4 to 3. Was a very good game, close all the way through. We were all surprised when Jimmy Dolan came up with them. He was transferred into the 1211th QM Co. a week before. He hadn't changed very much at all in the last two years. Sure was a lot to talk about with him and heard about more of the 48 fellows that left us. Marshall and Dolan especially had quite the confab and arranged to meet in Norwich on the following Saturday night. 30 June 1944, and another month has gone by, which also means another pay table. Had rumors floating around this morning that we would be paid in American money. Even had calls come to the QM Office to see whether we had ordered khakis and "Chop Sticks" 1 July 1944, the following named Enlisted Men of this organization promoted to Pfc. per Company Order #3 dated 1 July 1944. Private Eugene L. Clark, 38407504 Private George C. Cudd, 34777911 Private Albert J. Pferrman, 35805942 Private Everett F. Thompson, 35869831 Station Headquarters issued orders today that we would not carry our guns from this date. We had the USO show "Off Limits" here tonight and it was very good. Two nice looking American girls along with the G.I.'s 2 July l944, Hodor, Gentle, Fulton, Philbin and Sheedy paid a visit to Capt. Banks, Conway, Tschappat, Tice, Mike Chuey, Meady, Kotick, Davis, Waite and the other boys at Lavenham, Suffolk. They have a fairly good set-up now and very good for the length of time that the Base has been in operation. July 1944, 1st Lt. Krinke from duty to Detached Service, Isleworth PP #3 Special Order, #178 Hqs. Station 139, APO 559 dated 2 July 1944. Sgt. Henes from duty to Detached Service, Islevorth PP #4, Special Order #178, Hqs. Station 139, APO 559 dated 2 July 1944. 4 July 1944, makes the second one in the ETO for about half the Company and the first one for the new boy in the organization. As in all other holidays it didn't seem different from any other day and we carried on the same as any other day. 1141st softball team played the Hqs. Det., 100th and beat them by a score of 4 to 2 in 8 innings. The Base had free beer and sandwiches up near the diamond for all personnel on the Base. Sgt. Henes from Detached Service, Isleworth to duty. O'Keefe, Glorius swept and mopped their office this afternoon for a change. Guess miracles never cease, or else the heat was too much for them. They will tell you that they do this always, but don't let them kid you. 5 July 1944, 1st Lt. Krinke from Detached Service, Isleworth to duty. Sims has been spreading rumors that we would be home by this Christmas of 1944. Philbin believes he will be home in time to decorate the Christmas tree. Lets hope they are right. 6 July 1944, Pfc. Stapleton from Absent Sick, 231st Station Hospital, APO 598 to duty (LD). Pfc. Pirtle from duty to Sick Quarters (LD). Pirtle went to the Dentist at 1330 hours for an appointment and really got worked on for sure. He was in he chair for 3½ hours having a wisdom tooth pulled, so after that he had to be put in Sick Quarters. Capt. Scharding appointed President Of the Post Exchange Council PP #5 Special Order #182, Hqs. Station 139, AP0 559 dated 6 July 1944. 7 July 1944, this morning at 0830 hours eight teams inventoried the Base. Each team consisted of one Enlisted Man and one or more Officers. The teams consisted of the following Officers and Enlisted Men. Lt. Krinke, Lt. Terhune and T/Sgt. Philbin, Post, Exchange, Special Service, Station Sick Quarters and 869th Chemical Co. Lt. Glorius--Site No. 5. Everyone pitched in and helped go through the WAAF Site No. 1. Sure were plenty of rumors going around after the inventory was taken. 7 July 1944 Cont'd, the Gas Station boys had a little beer party of their own in the "Park" back of the Station. Also has some duck along with the beer. Latest thing in their department is the purchase of a goat by them to keep the grass down. Jerry said they would be soon cutting the grass, so he got the goat to do the job. They did have some ducks and chickens running around, but as you see they had a feast. What next? Burke took the goat to the Station Sick Quarters for registration and they about fell over when he brought it in. Station Headquarters issued orders today that we would only furnish one guard a night from this date. 10 July 1944, Pfc. Pirtle from Sick Quarters to duty (LD). The inventory of the Base was finished today and now the job of getting all the M/R's typed-up and signed is for Marshall. Get on the move Gus my boy. 10 July 1944, Sgt. Hanes from duty to Detached Service, Isleworth PP #4, Special Order #183, Hqs. Station 139, APO #559 dated 8 July 1944. Station 139, APO 559 dated 14 July 1944. 15 July 1944, mail has been very poor for the last week, which always does bring the morale down. The boys are all sweating it out. 16 July 1944, Private Ely's discharge papers were started through channels today. 17 July 1944, Sgt. Hanes from duty to Detached Service, Isleworth PP #5, Special Order #190, Hqs. Station 139, APO 559 dated 16 July 1944. The following named Enlisted Man assigned this organization from Det "A", 1245th QM Co. Serv Gp, Avn (RS), PP #2, Special Order #197, Hqs. 3rd Bomb Division, APO 559 dated 15 July 1944. Pvt. George C. Holmberg, 35218717 17 July 1944 Cont'd, the 1141st softball team played their first game of the league against the 1285th M.P. Co. and beat them by a score of 13 to 2. We were minus three of out best players with Glorius, Andreatta and Burke working or on pass. Browning, Terry and Harnden did a good job in their places though. As usual Clark pitched a good game, striking out 14 men and walking five. Wood knocked a home run in the last of the sixth with 2 on base to help matters out. 18 July 1944, Sgt. Henes from Detached Service, Isleworth to duty. The 1141st volley ball team played the 456th Sub Depot and beat them 2 out of 3 games for the first win of the league. At 2230 hours tonight a "Flying Bomb" hit near the base. The best of it was they called Red Alert, but no more than got red called over the Tannoy and the explosion came. Salve sure did get out in a hurry with his equipment on. He was shooting crap and all the boys that were there say it was the fastest they have seen "Commando" Salvo move. Tec 5 Alexander from duty to Sick Quarters (LD). 19 July 1944, the following named Enlisted Men of this organization are reclassified as shown below PP#12, Special Order #193, Hqs. Station 139, APO 559 dated 19 July 1944. M/Sgt. Fulton from 502 to 821. T/Sgt. Philbin from 585 to 502. Tec 3 Gentle from 835 to 821. Tec 3 Pasma from 835 to 821. Sgt. Gies from 193 to 194. ec 4 Browning from 835 to 821. Tec 5 Harnden from 193 to 194. Pfc. Constant from 521 to 590. M/Sgt. Fulton and Tec 5 Weiford went out with the Base Rifle team to compete against a British Home Guard team near Harleston. There is rumors around that Pfc. Meyers received a letter from "Ike" today with a promotion to a new rank of Tec 6 Grade. Guess he was talking to the A/1st Sgt. about a promotion, so it came through channels. The stripe is a Pfc. chevron with "T" in it. About two months ago we wrote a letter to Command Performance requesting they have the Andrew Sisters sing "Begin the Beguine" for the QM boys at APO 559. This afternoon Command Performance was rebroadcast over BBC and they had Dinah Shore sing instead of the Andrew Sisters, which was quite all right. They read the nicknames we had signed to it and when they did read "Duckbutter" Griffin everyone in the Studio audience laughed, so Griffin was made a hit on radio. 20 July 1944, Sgt. Henes hit a spot in the "Hash Marks" of the Stars and Stripes today. That makes about the third time something has appeared in the paper by him. 21 July 1944, Tec 5 Alexander from Sick Quarters to duty (LD). The 1141st softball team played a game with the 351st Bomb Sqd and won by a score of 3 to 2. Was a very close game all the way through. 22 July 1944, the 1141st volley ball team had a game with the 1285th M.P. Co. and won on a forfeiture. All the boys chipped in for a barrel of beer to have a party in the Day Room tonight. As usual most of the boys got feeling high and had a good time, O'Keefe got up on the box to make a speech several different times and one thing is certain, you have never heard a good speech until you hear him give one, especially with about nine "Mild and Bitters" under his belt to help out. They were up until all hours of the morning arguing about everything in general. Hut No. 3 had a "Hill Billy" program going on until 0300 hours. 23 July 1944, makes it fourteen months on Foreign Service for the Company, and those months went by in a hurry it seems. Captain Scharding received a letter from 2nd Lt. Sine today wanting to know how everything was going with all the boys. We wrote a letter to him and all signed it in answer to his letter. None of the boys that knew "Chief Wahoo" will ever forget the funny incidents that happened while he was with us. His new address is as follows; 2nd Lt. Henry H. Sine, Jr., O-1594484 Co. L, 179th Infantry APO 45, U.S. Army 24 July 1944, Sgt. Henes from duty to Detached Service, Isleworth PP#6, Special Order #197, Hqs. Station 139, APO 559 dated 23 July 1944. 1st Lt. Station 139, APO 559 dated 24 July 1944. 25 July 1944, Tec 5 Alexander from duty to Absent Sick, 65th General Hospital, APO 551 (LD). Again Available is Unavailable. The Gas Station boys have quite a time with their Nanny Goat. it isn't safe to leave any paper laying around because she will eat them up. They keep her out in the little "Park" back of the Station most of the time. If it were a Billy Goat would sure be mean as the devil the way they treat it. Most everyone is wondering what they will come out with next over there and those boys of Jerry's can be expected to do anything. A good foursome, Burke, Dillon, Crooks and Marsec. 26 July 1944, 1st Lt. Krinke from Detached Service to duty. Sgt. Henes from Detached Service, Isleworth to duty. The 1141st softball team had a game with the 28th Station Compl Sqd, and won on forfeiture. Organization received a letter from Station Ordnance stating the Carbines in our Company were in excellent condition from their last inspection. 27 July 1944, the 1141st volley ball team had a game with the 100th Bomb Group Hqs., and won by forfeiture. S/Sgt. Bob Myers left today for he 12th RCD and will go home from there. He was really happy about going home to see his wife and his folks too. We sure were glad to have him finish his missions and get back on the right side of the pond. Now we will have to wait and see what he has to say about the USA after getting back. 28 July 1944, the 1141st softball team played a game with the 349th Bomb Squadron and got beat by a score of 5 to 2. Really should have won the game, but too many errors. Captain Scharding appointed to investigate and report upon the incidence of injuries sustained by Cpl. Roy W. Webb, 350th Bomb Squadron PP #15, Special Order #201, Hqs. Station 139, APO 559 dated 27 July 1944. The following named Enlisted Men assigned this organization from Hqs. 8th Air Force Repl. Control Depot PP #2, Special Order #208, Section I, Hqs. 8th Air Force Repl. Control Depot APO 635 dated 26 July 1944. The ten boys left that started the outfit were sure surprised to see J.B. Lynch (Ex-188th Man). We received a teletype yesterday saying Sgt. J.B. Lynch and four other Enlisted Men would be in today. We all wondered if it could be the J.B. Lynch that was with us in Baer Field, Fort Wayne, Indiana and then left us in Tampa, Florida 19 June 1942. J.B. was sure surprised to find out it was our outfit he was assigned to, because he didn't know we had changed from the 188th QM to 1141st QM. Sgt., Joseph B. lynch, 32203273 Sgt. Eugene Nettleton, 32265973 Cpl. Fred Lachman, 39249446 Pfc. Charles S. Hale, Jr., 34363173 Pvt. Hubert B. Joyce, Hodor, Salvo, Fulton, Philbin and Sheedy paid a visit to the boys of the 1238th and 1237th QM Co. at Lavenhan and Sudbury this afternoon. First time we have seen Droll, Paranti, Wagner, Dumolian and Hosford of the 1237th in quite a sometime. Private Ely's discharge papers came back from 3rd Bomb Division. Captain Hosford sent them to Ely's Draft Board for approval in accordance with Par. 42, Change 17, AR 615-360. 31 July 1944, Sgt. This payday the 8th Air Force Bond Drive was on its way, starting 29 July 1944 and running to 3 September 1944, inclusive. Lt. General Doolittle calls it the 8th Air Force Victory Squadron and you get a card signed by him, when purchasing a bond. The favorite slogan around here is , "Did you sign the book." 1 August 1944, the following named Enlisted Men of this organization assigned to Special Duty as indicated below PP #5, Special Order #206, Hqs.
