OCTOBER l943

l October 1943, Organization started using new Morning Report, W.D., A.G.O. NO. 1 dated 1 July 1943.

The following named Enlisted Men promoted to Pfc. per Company Order #7 dated 1 October 1943.

Privates Dillon, Easter, Hodor, Myers and Sima.

2 October 1943, Sgt. Barnhart, Sgt. McCurry and Sgt. Bogan (Det. "A"), former of this organization who transferred to Air Corps as Aerial Gunner went on their first mission over Emden, Germany and returned none the worse. Most of the boys were along the runway "sweating" them in.

Tec 5 Fagg and Tec 5 Louden promoted to Technician 4th Grade.

7 October 1943, our Class III Supply Section, Gas and Oil, have really beautified their place of business, with the great help of Crooks and Marzec who planted a "Christmas Tree" in front of their office. Now if you were to ask Dillon about this situation, he could give you full details on this matter. All kidding aside they really do have a nice looking place.

8 October 1943, A Company Party and Dance was held in the Old Officer's Club with the Hq & Hq Sqd, 83rd Serv Gp and 98th Serv Sqd. The Det. "A" fellows attended very nearly in full strength and all seemed to have a good time. Conway was off on a good one and all the boys have fun with him. There was plenty of beer, coca cola, food and cigarettes for all. The food was good according to the way the English girls dug in. At 2400 hours there wasn't a sign of anything left. Gus Marshall did a very excellent job on the food committee keeping all the tables filled. The Century Bombers played for the dancing. The big trouble with the parties is loading the trucks with the girls when it is time for them to go home, usually takes about a half hour to get all the GIs out of the trucks before they leave the Base.

9 October 1943, the following named Enlisted Men of Det. "A", 1141st QM Co. are promoted to Pfc. PP #2, Special Order #134, Hqs. 95th Bomb Group, Station 119, APO 634 dated 9 October 1943.

OCTOBER 1943--Oversea Duty, Station 139, Thorpe Abbotts, 100th Bomb Groups:

6 October l943, the Mayor of Dickleburgh, Marsec and one of his Aldermen, are getting to the council meeting each night. Alderman Crooks had a little accident the other night while returning from a council meeting. They have been digging a ditch along the perimeter and so in the blackout Crooks rode off the side. If there had been any ladies around they sure would have been embarrassed to tears at such language.

17 October 1943, Pfc. Myers transferred to 351st Bomb Sqd. 100th Bomb Group Order #22, Hqs. Station 139, APO 634 dated 13 October 1943.

18 October 1943, the following named Officer placed on Temporary Duty, Station 136 with 1152nd QM Co. Serv Gp (Awn) PP #11, Special Order #27, Hqs. 3rd Bomb Division, APO 634 dated 13 October 1943.

2nd Lt. Jerry J. Rosenthal 0-1581348

19 October 1943, Pfc. Rosenfeld from Absent Sick, 2nd General Hospital, APO 647 to duty (LD). Again we had Metatarsal trouble, but should be all taken care of this time.

26 October 1943, a great thing happened. T/Sgt. Marshall received a cablegram from home saying his wife had a baby boy born at 0300 hours, 21 October 1943. One thing they did do right was name him James Joseph and not Augustus after his Old Man. In a letter received a few days later it was found to be a 9 lb. boy. Great work Gus and Looks like another "Blimp" for the Army of 1965 huh? All the boys in the Commissary are much relieved since that telegram arrived cause Marshall was sort of on edge "sweating the cablegram out".

27 October l943, under the provisions of AR 600-68 the following named Enlisted Men, Det. "A", l141st QM Co. Serv Gp (Avn) were awarded the Good Conduct Medal PP #1, General Order #4, Hqs. 95th Bomb Group, Station 119 APO 634 dated 27 October 1943.

T/Sgt. Conway, T/Sgt. Hays, S/Sgt. Spitz, Tec L Fagg, Tec 4 Louden, Tec 4 Kornblut, Tec 4 Tice, Corp. McManus, Corp. Tschappat, Tec 5 Fike, Tec 5 Marrello, Tec 5 Reich, Tec 5 Tomb, Tea 5 Waite, Pfc. Calabrette, Pfc. Carbone, Pfc. Corboy, Pfc. Elliott, Pfc. Gorman, Pfc. Hebert, Pfc. Kolke, Pfc. Melvin, Pfc. Reder, Pfc. Robinson, Pfc.. Seibert, Pfc. Sellers, Pfc. Tracy, Pfc. Troxell, Pfc. Von Bargen and Pfc. Wharton.

31 October 1943, another month gone by and another payday. Everyone in the army naturally likes to see this day come around. It means crap games, poker games, a trip to Harleston, Dickleburgh or some of the other surrounding villages to spend a few shillings or more, most always more too. It also means that five months ago tomorrow we landed in "Merry Ole England".

1 November 1943, the 1141st QM Co. Serv Gp (Avn) redesigned to 1141st QM Co. Serv Gp Avn (RS) per Section II, General Order #186, Hqs. VIII Bomber Command, APO 634 dated 1 November 1943. A final roster and initial roster was submitted to Hqs. VIII Bomber Command. All the fellows hated to see this happen because it meant a break-up of our Company and losing the Det. "A" fellows. The only good thing about this split-up was it made rating, open both here and at Station 119.

2 November 1943 Capt. Scharding made a letter of recommendation for promotion of Enlisted Men Of this organization before too many rated men came in as replacements.

The following named Enlisted Man assigned this organization from AAF Station 110 PP #13, Special Order #45, Hqs. 1st Bomb Division dated 30 October 1943.

T/Sgt. Olle R. Weedn 38086867

Pfc. Bogan, now S/Sgt. Aerial Gunner, formerly a member of Det. "A", 1141st QM Co. Serv Gp (Avn) and then transferred to 334th Bomb Sqd., 95th Bomb Group was transferred in grade to Air Corps unassigned and attached to 12th Replacement Control Depot, Station 591 pending transportation to the United States for Aviation Cadet Training PP #9, Special Order #302, Hqs. 8th Air Force dated 5 November 1943.

9 November 1943, 2nd Lt. Jerry J. Rosenthal, O-l581348, now on Temporary Duty with 1211th QM Co. Serv Gps Avn (RS) (formerly 1152nd QM Co. Serv Gp (Avn)), transferred to 1211th QM Co. Serv Gp, Avn (RS) PP #4, Special Order #50, Hqs. 3rd Bomb Division, APO 634 dated 7 November 1943.

11 November 1943, Armistice Day. Lt. Keith Murray, bombardier on a B-17, (former member of the Det. 1st QM Co. (Sup) (Avn)) who was shot down over France on Labor Day, returned through the French Underground to his Base today, AAF Station 119, 95th Bomb Group. He won't say much about his trip, but if you read between his sentences can Just about figure the experiences he has been through.

12 November 1943, another Company Party and Dance held with the 98th Service Sqd. and Hq & Hq Sqd, 83rd Serv Gp in the Old Officers Club. As usual had plenty of the "mild and bitters", coca cola, eats and girls. The Century Bombers furnished the music for dancing and they are really getting good. Lt. Banks, Lt. Keith Murray, Conway, Tschappat, Tice and Kolb were our guests for the evening.

16 November 1943, we received Change No. 1 to T/O 10-437 (RS) dated 19 June The change makes the A/1st Sgt. a T/Sgt. instead of S/Sgt.

20 November 1943, the following named Enlisted Man assigned this organization from 17th Replacement Control Depot (Avn) PP #1, Special Order #13, Hqs, 8th Air Force , APO 635 dated 16 November 1943.

Pfc. Ervin A. Constant 39390621

21 November 1943, the following named Enlisted Man assigned this organization from 17th Replacement Control Depot (Avn) PP #1, Special Order #13, Hqs, 8th Air Force , APO 635 dated 16 November 1943.

Pvt. Maurice R. Anetil 31268769

22 November 1943, S/Sgt. Salvo from duty to Sick Quarter (LD). Looks sort of bad after just returning from a pass to London, doesn't it?

23 November 1943, all personnel of the Base were restricted until further notice by the Base Commander, Colonel Harding.

24 November 1943, the following named Officer assigned this organization PP #10, Special Order #67, Hqs, 3rd Bomb Division, APO 634 dated 24 November 1943.

2nd Lt. Henry H. Sine, Jr. O-1594484

The following named Enlisted Men assigned this organization PP #1, Special Order #13, Hqs, 8th Air Force Replacement Depot, APO 635 dated 16 November 1943.

Tec 5 John P. Harndan 111161898
Tec 5 Angelo J. Parenti 32374916
Pfc. Ruben E. Wuoti 36418671

At this time shall give a short summary of our former boys, who are now Aerial Gunners on a B-17. To date Sgt. McCurry is leading with seven missions. Sgt. Barnhart is second with three missions. S/Sgt. Congrove, S/Sgt. Sowl and Sgt. Myers haven't been on one as yet but are expecting it soon. Sgt. Hoffman went on his first mission 8 October 1943 and was shot down, so to date they have heard no news about him or any of the other crew members. He is considered as "Missing In Action". We all hope he is just a Prisoner of War and nothing worse than that. Seems funny to know he is down over there some where, but that is the way it goes.

25 November 1943, Thanksgiving Day and here we are in the ET0. This makes the second Thanksgiving away from home for most of us and the first one over here. We really did have a good meal, which consisted of turkey, dressing, potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, pickles, salad, bread, butter, coffee, sugar and milk. The Base being Restricted at this time, the follows couldn't do much celebrating. The Aero Club had a G.I. program so some of the boys attended. Philbin after eating his turkey dinner (and it was a big one too) took a plane ride with Sgt. McCurry on the "Practice Mission". First time he has been up in the ET0. This was of course, in addition to his other duties.

The second night in the Company Lt. Sine sort of went on a spree and had quite the time with the fellows at the Huts. He had Levi, Bonny and a few more lined up in the Orderly Room showing them how to fix bayonets before going over the top. He kept sending one of the fellows after the lst. Sgt., but Tom just stayed in the Sack. The reason he wanted to see the 1st Sgt. was to inspect the Court-Martial files. To this date there has been no Court-Martials. About 0415 hours Lt. Sine made an Inspection of the Huts with the Charge of Quarters to see if the men were warm and comfortable, so he said. Said he wanted to take care of his men. He stopped and asked Bob Dillon why he was sleeping on top of his OD's when he was cold. All this commotion Just about caused Philbin's" blood vessel" to explode.

26 November 1943, S/Sgt. Salvo from Sick Quarters to duty (LD). Philbin thought it was about time for him to quit the "Gold-bricking" and get back to work. One reason why "Curly" didn't stay longer was the lack of Nurses around Sick Quarters. New don't take this to heart "Curly" cause we are just kidding.

Philbin And Salvo suggested we have the nicknames of all the fellows in the Company, so here goes: Fulton - Pop; Marshall- Blimp or Round-Man; Philbin-Pitman or Coo; Sheedy - Pee Wee; Woedn--Ray; Buehanan--Buck or Red-head; Salvo - Curly or Baldy; Gentle-Long Drink of Water or Boogey; Pasma- Father; Henes- Littlo Willie; Browning - Brownie; Andreatt Andy; Gloriue--Hound Dog or Lover; Bolot - Izzy; Griffin--Duck-butter; Harnden--Johnnie; Leonardo--Benny; Crooks--The Alderman or Old Man; Chuey - Mike; Maraec--The Mayor; or Lefty; Meady - Mead, O'Keefe-Mickey; Parenti - Angie; Terry - Lon; Alexander - Levi or Available; Brown_-Bob; Constant--Pop II; Dati _ Mother; Dillon,-Uncle Cay; Droll - Pretty Boy, Spareribs; Easter- Fong Troy; Harrison,-Jim; Hodor-Meat; Kotick--Grandmother; Rosenfeld_-Metatarsol; Sims - London Kid or Little Lloyd or Air Raid Shelter; Weiford - Hatfield: Wilder--Senator; Wuoti- Stormy: Anctil- Frenchy or Romeo.

November 1943 Overseas Duty, Station 139, Thorpe Abbotts 100th Bomb Groups

27 November 1943, another telegram received today by Capt. Scharding who by the way is still in a daze over Little Jerry, from "Bill" stating more details about "Little Jerry". He was born 23 November 1943 in Methodist Hospital Memphis, Tennessee and baptized "John Howard" Both "Little Jerry" and "Bill" are getting along fine.

29 November 1943 web were notified by Division QM that within the next month we probably would have to furnish a cadre from our Company.

Benny Leonardo had a very good idea today. Ho suggested web sort of adopt little Joyce Riches, four year old girl, that lives near the QM Warehouse, for Christmas Day. All the fellows gladly agreed so now arrangements are being made.

30 November 1943 Pay Day, one of the most important days in a man's Army as would say, quote, "How much do I get" A collection was taken for the Christmas Party to be held for all the young children near our Base.

Leonardo Philbin and Parenti cycled to Dickleburgh to help Mayor Marzec and Alderman Crooks at their Council Meeting. Always a big one on the last day of the month. Returning to the Base was sort of hard for all of them because too many of those dark and light ales under your belt makes cycling in the Blackout tough.

1 December 1943, Private Anctil promoted to Pfc. per Company Order #8 dated 1 December 1943.

3 December 1943, In Hut #6 tonight something happened that is one for the books. Actil, Weiford, Rosenfeld, Bolot and Gentle were playing poker with the lights out. The best part was they had Terry holding a flashlight so they could see to play. At the first of the month you are liable to see anything going on such as that though.

Capt. Scharding made an Interrogation Officer PP $14, Special Order #165, Hqs. Station 139, APO 634 dated 2 December 1943.

5 December 1943, T/Sgt. Congrove and T/Sgt. Scowl made their first mission today. When talking to them after the mission they said it wasn't too bad. Of course it was a first good mission, cause they didn't run into any fightersand not much flak.

6 December 1943, Lt. Keith Murray was over to see us before leaving for London. He will get his orders in London and then go back to the good old U.S.A. Lots of luck to you Keith.

11 December 1943, was the starting of the 1141st basketball team in the ETO. Special Services are now arranging to have the gym ready for the game. There will be a base league with each outfit having a team in it. The Blister Hanger is being used for a gym.

13 December 1943, S/Sgt. McCurry made his 10th mission today and S/Sgts Congrove and Sowl made their fourth mission. All the boys have really been sweating them in.

14 December 1943, the coke situation on the Base was at an all time low. If you ask Lt. Krinke or Leonardo they will give you the inside dope on how to straighten it our or die trying.

17 December 1942, Pfc. Jim Harrison was stopped by the M.P.'s for driving up a one way street near the Commissary on the 15th of December. Today he had to report to the Provost Marshall at 1300 hours and work for two and a half hours under the supervision of an M.P. Sgt. This form of punishment is something new to everyone on the base and is not going to be tolerated.

18 December 1943, Marshall was not feeling so well today and the main reason was a slight case of the GI's.

The mail was really plentiful with most everyone receiving some. The morale hit a new high, which makes the atmosphere much better around here.

19 December 1943, Pfc. Alexander from duty to Sick Quarters (LD). For the present "Available" is and will be "Unavailable".

21 December 1943, Mayor Marsec and Alderman Crooks missed their first council meeting in Dickleburgh in quite sometime. Most of the fellows were surprised to see them around the Huts after 1900 hours. Imagine the "Pubs" sort of missed them too.

22 September 1943, the Orderly Room and Supply Room now in Hut No. 8 will be moved to Hut No. 4. Half the building will be converted into a Day Room for our Company. Plans are being made for a Christmas tree with our home-made decorations on it and also to have it in order for our Christmas Party.

23 December 1943, Philbin and Salvo have moved into the new building for Orderly Room and Supply Room, also had started to arrange the Day Room, when in walked the Old Man. Well he didn't like the arrangement, so commenced to tell them how to fix it. We all know how he is about small matters, for instance ask the Service Center. If Philbin ever came close to blowing his top, he sure did today. He was going around for two days with a puss a mile long. Capt. Scharding is sort of leery about going near the Day Room now. He didn't mean to hurt "Tommie's" feelings and feels sort of guilty. Well this is the ETO and anything can happen.

24 December 1943, Christmas Eve, but really doesn't seem like it when away from home like this. Most all of the fellows either went to Protestant Services at 2000 hours or else to Midnight Mass.

25 December 1943, Christmas Day in the ETO. Hope this will be the last one too. This makes the second Christmas away from home for most of us and the first one in the ETO. We had an excellent dinner and for proof that it was good, no one did any beefing about it. The following is the menu for Christmas dinner:

Roast Turkey
Potatoes and Gravy
Dressing and Cranberry Sauce
Pickles, Peas, and Corn
Bread, Butter, Jam, Cakes and Cookies
Coffee, Milk and Sugar
Three Kinds of Pies

Leonardo, Philbin and Marshall brought our little adopted girl, Joyce Riches, to the Day Room for the Party. She had two of her girl friends and her Mother with her because she was too bashful to come by herself. It really was something to see how happy she was with the money, candy, etc. It made all the fellows feel good seeing her happy and sort of gave them the Christmas Spirit.

Pfc. Alexander from Sick Quarters to duty (LD). So now "Available" is back for duty.

27 December 1943, Lt. Krinke finally admitted that his sifter for coke wouldn't work or function so good. He has abandoned the idea of using it at the present time.

Levi left his little dog in the Hut over night, so in the morning there was a very nice mess on the floor, enough to make Tom raise the roof. A notice went up immediately stating no dogs would be allowed in the Huts over night.

29 December 1943, this morning everyone was out of bed and at the Mess Hall by 0630 hours. The reason for the big rush was of the rumor spread around the night before that there would be fresh eggs at breakfast. To everyone's surprise they did have fresh eggs.

We received some correspondence concerning Pvt. William F. Patton, 13036108, whom we transferred out of the Company while stationed at Boise, Idaho. They requested information to enter in his Service Record. Seems he went AWOL from McClelland Field, California and took his Service Record. Of course he denied taking it. While AWOL he was convicted by Civil Court and sentenced to one year at the County Farm, City of Danville, Virginia. He must have escaped from the County Farm because he was picked up by the M.P.'s and returned to Ft. Lee, Virginia. They are trying to gather enough information together to either Court-Martial or Discharge him from the Army.

31 December 1943, New Year's Eve in the ETO. Most all of the fellows cycled to Harleston or Dicklebourgh to help bring the New Year in. Seems from all reports that they did the job first-rate. A year ago this time we were sitting at Pendleton Field, Oregon waiting to move to AAB, Pueblo, Colorado, also wondering where we would be year from that time. Little did we know that they would have us over hear in the ETO.

Pfc. Davis started to work in the office 30 November 1943.

3 January 1944, the Air Inspector and his Staff from 2rd Bomb Division inspected the QM Warehouse this morning. This afternoon they inspected the Orderly Room and Commissary.

4 January 1944, the Beer Hall in he Post Exchange building opened for business today. From all reports it is going to be a nice place for the fellows to spend some leisure time after evening chow. You know, over a glass of good English Ale plenty of rumors can be started. Our boys will be well represented each night. They have named the Beer Hall, "Sad Sack's Shack". Really are some nice pictures on the blackout blinds and good morale builders too.

1 March 1944, the 1141st basketball team played the last game in the league against the 1276th M.P. Co. and as usual we lost by a score of 30 to 20. It was a fairly close game, but we just couldn't get going. The main thing about the games was the good exercise that we did get, which was worth it.

2 March 1944, S/Sgt. McCurry finished his 25 missions today. All the boys sure were happy about it but not half as happy as Mac was He sure was a relieved man and could tell it by looking at him. 18th today. T/Sgt. Myers made his 14th and T/Sgt. Sowl was brought back after taking off on his 15th mission and taken to the hospital. S/Sgt. Barnhart is still at the same place as he was four months ago 6.
