349th Sqdn. Crew joined the 100th 6 Mar 44. (What a day to join the 100th
- they lost 15 aircraft at Berlin 6 Mar 44)..pw
On 12 May 44 Monroe T. Whidby was aboard as Bombardier and became a POW
- this from James Brown in 1991.
An unknown Eyewitness reports:
"Aircraft #127 received a direct flak hit just behind the No #3 engine
while over the target. The aircraft peeled off on it's right wing,
slipping down 2000 feet. One chute was seen at this time and six more when
the plane established a controlled decent. Aircraft observed to explode
prior to ground contact." Wilbur G. Dishneau appears to have been killed
by flak in the Ball Turret. Jack Moore and Monroe T. Whidby were near the
front escape hatch when the aircraft exploded and were blown out. Moore
suffered a broken leg, whether in the explosion or upon hitting the ground
is undetermined. |
