349th Sqdn..
Crew joined 100th 3 May 1944. This was their twenty-sixth (26) mission.
A/C # 42-37865 MACR #
8073, Micro-fiche # 2964
EYEWITNESS: "About one and half minutes before
Bombs Away #865 was hit by flak in the # 2 engine and near the waist. This
separated the tail assembly and the aircraft immediately nosed down out of
our formation. Nothing further is known." There are some notations in the
MACR: " Lt Elton Dickens (BOM) bailed out with a serious leg wound. We
bailed out at 1130 hours. Lt Dickens talked sensibly for about three (3)
hours and slowly became delirious - his words were all but impossible to
understand and he died at 1800 hours. I think from loss of blood, we could
not control his bleeding. (It is not possible to positively identify the
writer from the MCAR, I think it must have been Gilbert A. Borba.) ..pw
Crew flew "Varga Venus"
