349th Sqdn. Crew joined the 100th 4 Aug 44.
A casualty report dated 12 Sep 44 shows William C. Terry as MIA from
Heironimus's A/C #43- 38161 (Oombree-Ago over Germany on 11 Sep 44. The 100th lost 12 aircraft on this mission.
Letter to Jim Brown from Russell W. Gaines explained why Terry was the
only POW when the rest of the crew CPT. Gaines wrote, "The crew was hit
and crashed landed in France. Bill Terry, I think, was knocked "funny" and
bailed out, ending up a POW. Ray Carl, flying in the waist was wounded,
but recovered. When crews were reduced to nine (9), I was taken off and
became a spare toggalier. Eventually there were an excess of spares and I
was given a ground assignment. I worked in Station Equipment where the
briefing room and flying gear was kept until the end of the war."
Memo from R. L. Heironimus Crew - On the Ruhland mission of 11 Sep 44
the crew crashed in a turnip field near Paris, France as close to the Main
Line of Resistance as possible. They were, however, on the Axis side of
the MLR but were rescued by French Peasants. With the exception of Terry
all were returned to Thorpe Abbotts. |
