From the Academy Spirit, August 29, 1997:The Academy dedicated a three-ton B-17 Flying Fortress memorial on August 22. The 17-foot bronze model serves as a memorial to the veterans who flew in this plane during WW II. The model stands in the Air Gardens east of Harmon Hall along with the P-51, P-47, P-40 and P-38. Robert Henderson, of Canon City, sculpted the model at a cost of $200,000 with funding from private donors. At the dedication, "Memphis Belle" pilot, retired Col. Robert K. Morgan, gave the dedication speech and said that his bomb group lost 80 percent of its men during the war.
