On the Regensburg mission this crew was the lead crew of the second element, low squadron. At 1020 fighters attacked the low squadron over eastern Belgium and severely damaged the aircraft. Claytor sounded the bail-out alarm. Eight of the men aboard got out safely, but Musante's chute caught on the horizontal stabilizer and was killed when the plane exploded in mid-air or when it crashed. Both Hinton and Musante received a military funeral and on 20 Aug 43 were buried at the St. Trond airfield. Hinton's grave number is #287 and Musante's #268 Little know fact:. Lt Col Beirne Lay Jr was to fly with this crew on August 17, 1943 but Major Gale Cleven had him switched at the last minute to Lt Tom Murphy’s plane because he felt it would be a safer position. That move most likely saved Lt Col Lay’s life..

Flying "tail end Charlie" to not only the 100th Group but the entire Regensburg force. Attacked by fighters about 10 minutes before reaching Nurenburg, Hummel's plane was seen to" blow up" but some chutes were seen. J. E. Devich had sustained a broken wrist and other injuries when one dark night he ran his bicycle into a ditch near the base. L. G. Bishoff was removed from the crew for hospitalization.
