On the mission to Hamburg on December 31, 1944, Lt. Mayo was flying in
the "B" Squadron, Low flight, last aircraft. At 12:25 PM, William Mayo
had fallen out of formation and was jumped by fighters. "Lt. Mayo was
heard on VHF saying he had lost two engines and might lose a third. He
expected to ditch if he lost another. A/C was subjected to intense
flak over Bremerhaven and was last seen over Spiekeroog Island, 5345N
0743E." This crew was shot down due to enemy fire and crashed in the
North Sea. |
