P-47 The photo shows P-47D 42-8478 CR-K of the 370th Fighter Squadron, 359th Fighter Group. The photo must have been taken on 3 March 1944 when this Thunderbolt force-landed at Thorpe Abbots. Pilot at the time was Lt. Howard E Grimes although I don't think that it was his assigned a/c as he had another forced-landing, at Bungay this time, on 8 March in CR-H. Grimes himself was subsequently KIA on 22 June in a P-51B. I assume that the other two photos are a head-on shot of this a/c and one taken as it made its way home to East Wretham after refueling. Can't make out the code properly in the distance shot. 42-8478 seems to have subsequently spent a short time with the 355th FG and then finally with the 356th at Martlesham Heath where it was involved in a taxiing accident on 31 August as OC-V(bar) with Lt. Paul R Mellinger in control.   Photo courtesy of Earl Rudolph
