One of the bomb
shelters at Thorpe Abbotts. Mostly ground crew on break. Note the
small English lads standing against the building. Inconceivable as
it may seem in our age civilians lived near and sometimes on the
base. The natural love of children of the Americans was never more
obvious than during WWII. They shared their food with them and
lavished gifts for them at Christmas and other holidays. Sam Hurry
who lived just at the edge of the base recalled the day the 100th
went home in 1945 as one of the saddest days in his life.
